4 Ways Acupuncture Can Improve Your Sex Life

“Let’s talk about sex baby.  Let’s talk about you and me. Let’s talk about all the good things and the bad things that may be.  Let’s talk about sex”

Ok now that you’re all singing along and will likely get the song stuck in your head, let’s talk about sex and how acupuncture can improve your sex life.  Now you’re probably wondering how these are connected.  It’s not some sort of fetish thing.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) sexual dysfunction of any kind, whether it is low libido, excessive libido (yes this is a thing), impotency, premature ejaculation, or painful intercourse; is all related to a disharmony of the kidney system.

.

TCM has a long history of using acupuncture and herbs to increase sexual desire and performance. Low libido or lack of desire is usually seen as kidney system dysfunction.  The kidney system, in TCM, is considered the root of Essence (life or vitality). Every metabolic activity uses and consumes this essence.  This essence is stored in our kidneys.  The kidney system is also responsible for reproduction, birth, and sexuality.  So if there is a lack of libido or lack of sexual desire you need to tonify and nourish those kidney systems.  Acupuncture has an effect on the neurological system, endocrine system, and cardiovascular system. All of these systems are involve in our sexual response.  Acupuncture can help tonify the kidneys systems in the body, which will help restore sexual function.

2. O is for Orgasm

We all want incredible orgasms right? Well not everyone experiences this.  Failure to orgasm in TCM is related to dysfunction of the liver system.  This dysfunction more specifically is stagnation. The liver system is in charge of moving the Qi (energy) smoothly throughout the body.  The liver channel flows through the genitals.   A lack of orgasm is related to an interruption of Qi (energy) flow.  Acupuncture can help by breaking up stagnation and allowing for a smooth flow of Qi to the sexual organs.

Lack of sleep is a major factor in a reduction in one’s sex life. Fatigue and lack of sleep is one of the most common complaints for this decline in sex.  Lack of sleep plays a significant role in reducing testosterone levels and low libido.  A major complains of new mum’s are lack of sleep and fatigue. This plays a significant role on their sexual desire.  Acupuncture is outstanding at improving sleep quality.  Acupuncture helps increase melatonin production and total sleep time.  Acupuncture can help you fall asleep faster and can even help you stay asleep throughout the whole night.  With all those extra zzz’s and some acupuncture treatments, you will increase your sexual desire and even increase your stamina!

Stress is one of the leading causes of disease and dysfunction. Stress stagnates the energy in your body.  Our liver system is mostly affected by this stress and this stagnation.  If the liver Qi (energy) is stagnated, it will affect almost every organ in the body. This takes a toll on the organs systems and will speed up the aging process of the body.  Stress also affects the heart system.  The heart system is the emotional center of the body.  The heart system, in TCM, is also said to house the mind. When Qi of the heart system becomes obstructed due to emotional causes, it will affect women’s menstruation cycles and fertility.  Stress can also reduce sperm count.  The hypothalamus regulates both stress response as well as the sex hormones.  Because of this, it is easy to see how stress affects one’s sexuality.   Acupuncture is very beneficial for decreasing stress in the body by regulating the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system, hormonal imbalances and circulatory problems.  Acupuncture deals with stress for both physical and emotional causes.

Acupuncture targets the root dysfunction and adjusts the underlying pattern of disharmony allowing for a healthy functioning sex life.
